FAQs about Cows
When left to their own devices, cows can live up to 40 years! But cows in the beef and dairy industry rarely make it to 7. Our passion is to rescue cows so that they can have long, healthy lives.
Cows eat a lot of different plants but their favorite food is grass. There are a lot of overgrown plots of invasive grasses on the island and clearing them would require a lot of poison and fossil fuels. Cows can clear those terrains easily and for a fraction of the cost, fertilizing the land as they go!
Cud is a cow's second breakfast. Cows have a complex digestion process since they eat a lot of fiber, this includes having TWO stomachs! The food they eat goes into their second stomach for a first round of digestion before coming back up to be chewed and swallowed down into their second stomach. The food they're chewing a second time is called the cud.
Yes! Cow poo, called manure, is able to fertilize and regulate the healthy bacteria levels in soil. It is an all-natural, bio-regenerative fertilizer that works without harsh chemicals.
Ahimsa is Sanskrit for nonviolence. Ahimsa is a guiding principle in how we care for our rescues. Any milk we gather from cows is done without cruelty or force and is often a relief to cows with babies who aren't old enough to drink it all yet.
